That fluttering, chattering sound in the chimney every summer is almost always chimney swifts - migratory birds that arrive in Louisville from South America each spring and nest inside masonry chimneys from May through August. Louisville's older neighborhoods, with their unlined brick chimneys, host thousands of swifts each season.
Chimney swifts are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act: active nests cannot be removed, period. The lawful fix is patience plus prevention - once the young fledge and the birds migrate in late summer, we clean the chimney and install a properly fitted chimney cap so they can't return next April. We handle the timing and compliance so you don't accidentally break federal law.
Chimney Swift Removal Questions, Answered
There's a chattering noise in my chimney - can you remove the nest?
If it's chimney swifts, not until the young fledge. Chimney swifts are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so active nests can't be disturbed. The good news: the noisy phase lasts only two to three weeks, the birds eat thousands of flying insects daily, and they migrate to South America in the fall. Once they've left, we clean the flue and install a code-compliant chimney cap so it never happens again.
How do swifts even get into a chimney?
Swifts nest almost exclusively in uncapped masonry chimneys - they physically can't perch like other birds and need a rough vertical wall to cling to. If your chimney is uncapped, it's a candidate every May through August. A properly installed stainless cap solves it permanently, and ours are covered by the 10-year guarantee.
